There is a vast difference between mathematical world and real world. Real world presents challenges like manufacturing tolerances, backlash, ergonomics, aesthetics, coupling load to actuator (motor), type of actuator etc. It is very important for an Engineer to understand these practical problems and understand how to overcome them to be a useful problem solving engineer. Kinematics and Animations are sufficient for a Mathematician. But a physical model is very essential for teaching mechanisms to an ENGINEER.
